Jeff Sonhouse (b.1968) is a New York-based painting who draws great inspiration from European artists of the 20th century. In the works created for Joseph Editions and in his recent paintings, Sonhouse reimagines the sartorial ‘dandy’ as a contemporary African-American male. He adds an important viewpoint to the rich characterization of the harlequin in western painting.
Sonhouse earned his MFA in painting from Hunter College. He was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation award and a New York Foundation for the Arts prize in 2004. His work has been exhibited at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, the Rubell Family Collection, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Pizzuti Collection, and the Tang Museum.
